Historical culture: living history

It is not without reason that the valley is considered to be one of the most beautiful valleys in Spain. From the moment you enter the Jalón Valley, you feel the peace, space, authentic Spanish culture and history. In contrast to the big cities and often crowded coastal towns, time seems to "just" stand still - which does not mean that nothing is happening!

Traditions and village life

This sense of history is not so strange, because the history of the Jalón Valley goes back to Roman times. The most visible "past" in the valley, however, is due to the Moors and Muslim farmers who have left their mark throughout the centuries. For example, not only the town of Guadalest (where a castle has literally been suspended from a cliff since an earthquake in the 12th century), but also the countless "terraces" built against the mountains for agricultural purposes are of Moorish origin. Many villages such as Benigembla and Alcalalí owe their name to the Moorish period, which can be seen from, for example, Beni ~ ('son of') and Al ~ (Arabic article).

Living history

With such history the Jalon Valley, in addition to its wonderful and healthy climate, also offers its visitors a wealth of cultural history. All villages in the valley, however small, tell their own story with their unique appearance and sights. Varying from Riuraus (the characteristic buildings where Muscat grapes and raisins were dried in the 18th-20th century) to various small-scale museums and workshops, authentic bodegas, murals, caves and cave houses and old ruins. And all this in a vast, varied and surprising landscape with unparalleled and photogenic views.
